The story of Mosseltrap

On a clear winter’s morning, you will find the seagulls frolicking in the shallow waters at Wamakersvlei beach. The seagulls’ dance (mosseltrap) is actually a way in which they dig their webbed feet into the sand to find white mussels (donax Serra).

When they find a mussel, they will fly up into the air with their catch and drop it on the beach in an attempt to break the solid shell.  You may also, on occasions, see a lonely fisherman doing a similar dance in the shallow water at low-tide looking for white mussels to use as bait to catch that 5kg Galjoen (The national fish of South Africa).
